Become a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)

So, I am now a Certified ScrumMaster®. 🎉

Wanted to share the steps I took to pass the exam.

Follow Jimi from Fearless Agility on Facebook, Linkedin, or Twitter to get updates about scholarships. Once in a while, he’ll post discount codes for his Scrum Alliance-related courses, so turn on notifications (unless you want to pay the $700+ 🙅🏾‍♀️).

I stalked followed his page for months and finally got a code for the CSM by Scrum Alliance. You have to sign up for a workshop to take the exam. It’s a 2-day workshop (7 hours each day) on the weekend where you get hands-on experience with all things agile and scrum on a platform called Miro.

On day 1, it’s all about learning the terms and a couple of team-building projects. On day 2, you will work with your team (5-6 people) as a scrum team to create a game. There will be 1 Product Owner, 1 Scrum Master, and the rest will be Developers/Team Members. Protip: Have some snacks and water close by!

After the workshop, you get a link from Scrum Alliance to create a profile and then sit for the exam. The exam is 60 minutes and has 50 multiple-choice questions. You need to get 37 questions right (pass 74%). The workshop covers your exam and 2 free attempts. But, you don’t have to worry about that because the test is super easy and you’re guaranteed to pass the first time. All of the answers will be from the Scrum Guide and Agile Manifesto. Please don’t pay for practice exams. Everything you need to know is in these 2 guides:

If you can’t find a discount code or you’re looking for a self-paced course (that costs way less), try the Professional Scrum Master I cert from Scrum.org. It’s a $150 exam that’s also open book, and you can learn at your own pace (no 2-day workshops).

I’ve seen job posts asking for CSM or PSM, so you can’t go wrong with either. The only thing is you have to renew your CSM and pay a fee in 2 years. I believe there is no expiration or fee for the PSM I.

And finally, once you’re certified, start tracking your SEUs now by watching videos, reading articles, volunteering, or attending webinars. You will need 20 to renew your cert.
